How the RET helps:
We support the displaced students in a number of ways:
- provision of educational materials (reading material, scientific apparatus, toolkits, school materials such as pens, notebooks, pencils, slate boards, chalk and books, shoes, uniforms and all necessary materials for vocational training);
- special provision for girls and youth with special needs: extra support / incentives to encourage their schooling such as clothes, sanitary towels and soap;
- in more & more host countries the refugee students can even take the official exams of their home countries. They can obtain recognised diplomas and certificates.
We make a difference for displaced teachers by providing:
- teacher training and incentives;
- pedagogical materials: country of origin curricula whenever the situation permits, reproduction and distribution of materials;
- role models to girls and young women by encouraging the presence of female teachers
Building for the future by:
- constructing classrooms, schools, latrines, laboratories, libraries and district education centres (DESC). These durable facilities are, as much as possible, constructed in a way and place where they can continue to serve the local population after the repatriation of refugees.
Community participation:
Refugee communities, as well as, local communities are involved in the execution of the educational activities. Students, parents and teachers together with the RET, UNHCR and other NGOs form the Local Education Council (LEC). During these LEC meetings, all partners involved, discuss on the initiatives taken, problems that have occurred, decide on how to divide the funds provided. The local communities are updated on the RET programmes and are encouraged to deliver local certification to the refugee students.
Raising awareness by organising the first ever International Symposium on Post-Primary Education for refugees and IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) and by heading up an inter-agency task team on Education in Emergencies under the auspices of INEE, the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies.
