Victor's story

Victor is a Congolese refugee, a teacher and a father of four children. He teaches English and history in a school in a refugee camp in Eastern Tanzania. All of his students suffer from being refugees. His passion is educating the refugees to prepare them for the reconstruction of their home countries. He is confident that the students who finish secondary school will have a bright future. “I’m preparing them to become our country’s new leaders.” However, there are some problems: lack of textbooks and lack of materials for the students and the need for extra training for teachers. He would like to be an even better teacher, so that he can give his students a better education. “Luckily, thanks to the RET, teaching in the rainy season is no longer a problem”, he says, “because the RET provided funds for renovating the classrooms and the latrines. Before, we couldn’t teach in the rainy season, because it rained inside the classrooms, there was mud everywhere.”

“I am very happy that the situation is improving,” he says, “but we still need extra efforts to bring more girls to the schools. Please do not misunderstand me. I am really satisfied with all the improvements that have been done so far, but there is still a long way to go.” The RET also was able to sponsor a teacher training seminar for Victor and the other teachers.
